How Often Should You See Your OB During Pregnancy?

Featured Image

If you're like many women who are expecting or planning to become pregnant, one of the first questions you may have is how often you should see your OBGYN during pregnancy. The answer can vary from person to person based on factors like health history, past pregnancies, your baby's growth and development, and others. Additionally, the frequency of OB appointments during pregnancy changes over time — with appointments often being more frequent during earlier and later stages of pregnancy.

Again, however, this will all depend on individual patient variables. At Professionals for Women's Health — offering prenatal care in Columbus, Dublin, and Westerville, OH —our caring women's health specialists are here to help monitor you and your baby during this incredible chapter of life. Take a closer look below at how often you have doctor's appointments during pregnancy, what to expect during prenatal appointments, and more.

When is your first appointment during pregnancy?

Most women have their first prenatal appointment between 8 – 10 weeks of pregnancy. This initial visit lays the groundwork for the rest of the care. Your OB will confirm the pregnancy and estimate pregnancy due date. Prenatal testing may also be ordered to assess your overall health and identify any potential risk factors. This appointment is also a good opportunity to ask questions and talk about nutrition, prenatal vitamins, and lifestyle considerations during pregnancy.

How often are pregnancy appointments with an OB?

In a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, prenatal visits typically follow a predictable schedule that becomes more frequent as your due date approaches. During the first trimester and early second trimester, appointments are usually scheduled about once every four weeks. This cadence allows our OBs to monitor your progress while giving your body time to adjust to pregnancy changes. Around the third trimester, visits often increase to every two weeks as your baby grows more rapidly and your body undergoes additional changes.

Once you are about 36 weeks pregnant, weekly appointments are common. These visits focus on preparing for labor and delivery while keeping a close eye on both maternal and fetal development and well-being. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or specific medical concerns, we may recommend more frequent visits to ensure optimal care.

What happens at an OB visit during pregnancy?

Each prenatal appointment serves a specific purpose depending on how far along you are. Most visits focus on checking in on both you and your baby while tracking normal pregnancy changes and identifying potential concerns early. What to expect at pregnancy appointments may include:

  • Weight check
  • Blood pressure
  • Urine sample
  • Belly measurement
  • Heartbeat check

We will also ask about symptoms, such as nausea, swelling, fatigue, or changes in movement, as pregnancy progresses. As you move further along, visits may include ultrasounds, glucose screening, and conversations about birth planning and delivery preferences. These appointments are also an important opportunity to review test results, ask questions, and talk through any physical or emotional changes you may be experiencing between visits.

When should I call my doctor between prenatal appointments?

While regular prenatal visits are important, there are times when you should contact your OB between appointments. Call your provider if you experience severe abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, persistent headaches, vision changes, sudden swelling, decreased fetal movement, or signs of infection, such as fever while pregnant. Our caring team at Professionals for Women's Health is here to help safeguard your health, your growing family's health, and your comfort and peace of mind throughout pregnancy, delivery, postpartum care, and beyond.
